The Block Party That Changed Everything

Every summer has its moment. That one weekend where the music hits different, the crowd is electric, and you feel like you're watching history being made in real time. For hip-hop, R&B, and Black culture — that weekend is The Roots Picnic.

Returning to Philadelphia on May 30–31, 2026, the annual celebration curated by The Roots is back bigger than ever, now with a brand-new home at Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park — and a lineup so stacked it barely feels real.

Jay-Z Headlining Night One: 30 Years of Reasonable Doubt

Let's start where the conversation always starts: Hov.

Jay-Z headlines Saturday night — the first time the Brooklyn legend has performed with The Roots crew in over 25 years, since his iconic MTV Unplugged in 2001. This isn't just a concert. It's a coronation. Jay-Z is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt, the debut album that redefined what rap could be — the cold, cinematic storytelling, the Biggie-meets-Sinatra cool, the blueprint for an entire generation of MCs.

As far as anyone knows, Philadelphia is one of only two places on earth where Hov plans to mark this milestone. The other? His native New York. That's the caliber of event we're talking about.

Erykah Badu Closes Sunday: The Queen Returns

If Jay-Z is the Saturday knockout, Erykah Badu is the Sunday sermon.

The Queen of Neo Soul — responsible for On & On, Bag Lady, Tyrone, and The Roots' own Grammy-winning You Got Me — returns to the Roots Picnic stage on Sunday, May 31. This is a reunion in the truest sense. Badu and The Roots have one of the most sacred partnerships in modern Black music, and watching them share a stage in Philly, in the park, under the open sky? That's a spiritual experience.

The Full 2026 Lineup

Beyond the headliners, the 2026 Roots Picnic is a master class in curation. Here's who's coming to the Plateau:

Saturday, May 30 — Jay-Z, The Roots, Mariah the Scientist, Wale, T.I., Corinne Bailey Rae, De La Soul, Jermaine Dupri, Black Thought, Bilal, DJ Diamond Kuts, DJ Miss Milan

Sunday, May 31 — Erykah Badu, Kehlani, Brandy, Andra Day, Adam Blackstone, Ledisi, Tamar Braxton, Yolanda Adams, Chante Moore, Destin Conrad, KWN, India Shawn, Amir Ali, Rae Bae the DJ

All Weekend — Kenny Burns, Noochie, Joe Kay, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Funk Flex, and more.

The festival also celebrates two massive anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of go-go music and the 30th anniversary of the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. Both deserve their flowers, and the Roots Picnic is giving them.

A New Home: Belmont Plateau

For 2026, the festival moves to Belmont Plateau — and it's not just a venue change, it's a homecoming.

Philadelphians know the Plat. It's the legendary hangout spot that inspired Will Smith's immortal line in Summatime: "A place called the Plateau is where everybody go." The Plateau sits just over the hill from the festival's longtime home at the Highmark Mann, offering stunning panoramic views of the Philadelphia skyline — one of the most scenic natural overlooks in the entire city.

After some operational challenges in 2025, the team listened to fans and upgraded the experience:

  • —Improved mobile app with real-time event alerts
  • —Two entrances to reduce crowd bottlenecks
  • —More customer service ambassadors across the grounds
  • —Reimagined VIP experience
  • —Better weather communication systems

This is what happens when the people who run your city's greatest festival actually care.

Philly on the Big Stage

One of the things that makes the Roots Picnic different from every other festival: it's by Philadelphia, for Philadelphia.

This year, the next generation of Philly artists — including West Philly rapper Amir Ali and legendary turntablist DJ Jazzy Jeff (who got his start performing right here at the Plateau alongside Will Smith before either of them were famous) — take the stage on one of the city's biggest platforms.

This is a festival that could go anywhere and stays home. Every single year.

Food, Vendors & Vibes

The Roots Picnic isn't just a concert — it's a full cultural experience:

  • —A curated food village spotlighting Black-owned Philly restaurants and food trucks
  • —Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options throughout the grounds
  • —A vendor village with local makers and brands
  • —Brand activations, photo ops, and giveaways all weekend
  • —Official Roots Picnic merch (grab it early — it sells out fast)

The vibe is equal parts block party, family reunion, and daytime rave.

Why This One Matters

We cover a lot of festivals. A lot of lineups. A lot of "must-see" moments that feel forgettable by September.

The Roots Picnic is different.

It's 20+ years of Black excellence, community, and music done right. It's Jay-Z meeting Questlove in a Philly park. It's Erykah Badu closing out a Sunday like she's been sent from somewhere better than here. It's DJ Jazzy Jeff on the same plateau where he used to spin records for Will Smith before either of them were famous.

It's the block party that never sold out. The festival that stayed home.

See you at the Plateau.
