Who Is JMSN? Detroit's Alternative R&B Auteur

Christian Berishaj, known professionally as JMSN (pronounced "Jameson"), is an Albanian-American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, audio engineer, mixer, and music video director who has quietly become one of the most respected figures in alternative R&B. Born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in the Detroit suburb of Eastpointe, Michigan, Berishaj is of partial Albanian descent from his father, who is from Albania — a heritage that has informed the emotional depth and sonic ambition of everything he has created since adopting the JMSN moniker in 2012.

With over 5.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify and a catalog spanning nine studio albums, JMSN has built a career on refusing to be categorized. His music moves fluidly between alternative R&B, electronica, soul, rock, and hip-hop, unified by a voice that sings from the gut and a production aesthetic that favors raw emotion over polish. He has been called Detroit's answer to The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Miguel — but the truth is, JMSN sounds only like JMSN.

Before JMSN: Love Arcade, Christian TV, and the Atlantic Years

Before JMSN existed, there was Love Arcade. While still in high school, Berishaj started a band originally called Snowhite, which morphed into Love Arcade — a group that landed a record deal with Atlantic Records in 2005. They released one self-titled album before disbanding, an experience that taught Berishaj the limits of major-label creative control.

From 2009 to 2011, Berishaj released music under the pseudonym Christian TV, an electropop project that produced singles like "When She Turns 18," "I'm In Love," and "Love 2 Baby." His songs "1, 2, 3 Turn Around" and "Victoria's Secret" were included on the compilation album Girlfriend Pop in 2009, with the former also appearing on the soundtrack of the 2009 film Fired Up! It was a formative era — one that gave Berishaj his first taste of industry attention but left him searching for a sound that felt authentically his own.

Priscilla: The Album That Changed Everything

That sound arrived on January 11, 2012, when Berishaj — now operating under the name JMSN and running his own label, White Room Records — released his debut album, Priscilla. Written and produced entirely by Berishaj, it was a dark, melancholic alternative R&B record that pursued emotional themes over cinematic beats. The Guardian described it as "spaced out" and compared it favorably to The Weeknd's early mixtapes.

Berishaj self-directed music videos for "Alone," "Hotel," and "Something" to accompany the album, establishing himself as not just a musician but a complete visual auteur. The impact was immediate: in April 2012, R&B legend Usher told NME that JMSN was his "favorite new act," a co-sign that rippled through the music industry and introduced JMSN to a global audience.

The Blue Album, Pllaje, and the Ab-Soul Connection

The success of Priscilla led to Pllaje on November 5, 2013, which garnered Berishaj further acclaim and expanded his collaborative reach. He began working with artists like J. Cole, The Game, and West Coast rapper Ab-Soul. In August 2012, Berishaj produced "Nibiru" for Ab-Soul, and the two announced a collaborative album, Unit 6, with the lead single "You're Gone" featuring vocals from both artists. The album was ultimately shelved due to business disagreements — a reminder that even the most creatively fertile partnerships can be undone by the business of music.

On December 9, 2014, JMSN released The Blue Album, his third full-length. It was a pivotal moment in his catalog: smoother, more self-assured, and a record that saw him touring extensively across North America. The album solidified JMSN's reputation as a must-see live performer, building a loyal fanbase that has followed him through every sonic evolution since.

An Artist in Constant Motion: It Is., Velvet, Heals Me

What separates JMSN from many of his contemporaries is his refusal to stay in one place. The 2016 album It Is. leaned into soul and jazz. In August of that year, Berishaj revealed that he was the elusive artist Pearl, writing in a handwritten letter: "I started Pearl to have another creative outlet besides JMSN. White Room Records is about freedom. Be what you want to be."

That philosophy — freedom to be what you want to be — is the through-line of JMSN's entire career. 2017's Whatever Makes U Happy was bright and freewheeling. 2018's Velvet was lush and nocturnal. 2021's Heals Me was raw and intimate, a pandemic-era record that found Berishaj at his most vulnerable. Each album was a complete vision: written, produced, arranged, mixed, and directed by Berishaj himself, because he refuses to hand over any part of the process.

Soft Spot: The Viral Moment

On October 11, 2023, JMSN released Soft Spot on White Room Records. At the end of 2024, the title track gained explosive attention on social media through a viral snippet of its music video. On December 2, 2024, a remix version featuring Detroit rapper Sada Baby was released, further amplifying the song's reach.

In 2025, JMSN's 2023 song "Love Me" found a second life as a meme, with internet users comparing its intro to Drake's catalog. The track became one of JMSN's most-streamed songs, sitting at the top of his Spotify most-played list alongside "'Bout It," "Soft Spot," and "Talk Is Cheap." For an independent artist operating outside the major-label machine, the viral moments were validation of a philosophy built on persistence and creative freedom.

...it's only about u if you think it is.: The Rock Record

On October 14, 2025, JMSN released his ninth studio album, ...it's only about u if you think it is. The record leaned hard into Detroit rock and grunge elements, proving once again that Berishaj is as much a student of rock as he is of soul. It was a bold pivot from the alternative R&B that made his name — and it worked. The album's tracks, including "Blow The Spot Up," "Love The Things U Hate," "Dirty Dog," "Click Bait," and "Goodbye," became immediate live set staples.

Influences and Artistry: Why JMSN Sounds Like JMSN

Berishaj has cited Whitney Houston, Prince, Phil Collins, Fiona Apple, and Radiohead as formative influences — a list that spans genres but shares a common thread: artists who sang from the gut and refused to be boxed in. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays vocals, guitar, bass, violin, and drums, and every JMSN release is a fully realized vision from the first note to the final frame of every video.

In an era when the algorithm rewards conformity, JMSN has built a career on the opposite principle. He releases music on his own label, directs his own videos, plays his own instruments, and follows his own instincts — whether that means a soul record, a rock record, or something in between. The Scared Straight Tour is a chance to see that philosophy made physical: one artist, nineteen international cities, and a catalog that refuses to sit still.
