Who Is MOTHERMARY? The Twin Sisters Turning Faith Into Dark Art-Pop

A PaperMedia Editorial Feature · By PaperMedia

MOTHERMARY are identical twin sisters Elyse and Larena Winn. Their music does not sit neatly within a single genre — it lives in the space between ethereal and industrial, between whispered devotion and defiant declaration, between the sacred and the profane.

To understand the project, you have to understand where it began. The Winn sisters grew up as the youngest of eleven children in a strict Mormon family in Missoula, Montana. Every detail of their upbringing was structured around belief — prescribed roles, moral certainty, and impossible expectations placed on women. The name MOTHERMARY is drawn directly from that world: the mother of Christ, the ultimate symbol of religious devotion, and the impossible standards placed upon women.

For the sisters, making music has become a means of reclaiming their narrative. Their work asks a question that reaches beyond their personal history: how do you define yourself when the role assigned to you no longer fits?

The Origin: From Montana to Brooklyn

Elyse left BYU-Idaho without knowing anyone, hitching a ride to Salt Lake City and eventually landing in New York. She bartended at Featherweight in Brooklyn, ran a Drink and Draw series above the bar, and began making music alone in a Bushwick bedroom. The earliest MOTHERMARY flyers featured only Elyse — the project was hers before it was theirs. She taught herself music production as part of claiming creative control over the sound.

Larena arrived in New York later that year. She brought with her a background in theater — she had played Jennyanydots and Bombalurina in a surreal, fully-furred production of Cats at BYU, and had toured with a children's musical. When she joined Elyse, the project became a conversation between identical twins who had lived different versions of the same childhood. The tension between their separate paths and shared blood became the engine of the music.

The Name: Reclaiming the Sacred

Named after the mother of Christ, the project takes the ultimate symbol of religious devotion and turns it into a question. Mary is the woman who was told what to believe, what to feel, and what her body meant. MOTHERMARY reclaims that figure — not as a symbol of submission, but as an invitation to ask what you worship and why. The name is both tribute and provocation, a way of holding the sacred up to examination.

The Sound: Dark Electro-Pop, Self-Made

The music exists in the space between ethereal and industrial — synths that feel like church organs filtered through a distortion pedal, vocals that move between whispered devotion and defiant declaration. Elyse produces the tracks, a skill she taught herself to ensure the sound would be entirely her own. Chris McLaughlin, met in New York and now a creative partner, co-produces and mixes. The result is a catalog that feels like a series of prayers written for a religion that doesn't exist yet.

Italians Do It Better: The Label and the Lineage

MOTHERMARY releases through Italians Do It Better, the label founded by Johnny Jewel — the producer behind Chromatics, Glass Candy, and Desire. The connection is more than a business arrangement; it places the twins within a lineage of cinematic, synth-driven art pop that treats atmosphere as seriously as melody. The 2026 tour places them on shared bills with Desire and Johnny Jewel himself, bringing that label relationship into a live context.

I Am Your God: The Debut Behind the Identity

Released through Italians Do It Better on January 28, 2022, I Am Your God establishes the central language of MOTHERMARY's catalog. The 12-track album includes "Catch Fire," "Wearing Me Thin," "Give It Up," "Resurrection," "Like A Prayer," "Burn With Desire," "Pray," and "Coming For You," alongside shorter pieces and the closing title track.

Read together, those titles reveal a recurring vocabulary. Prayer, fire, angels, resurrection, and desire appear across the sequence, bringing spiritual language into contact with intimate feeling. The sisters have described the record as an invitation to consider what people worship and to recognize their own holiness.

Non-Duality and "Set Me on Fire": The Evolution

MOTHERMARY's 2025 EP Non-Duality includes "Fucked Up," "Feel," "Alone," and "For You." In an interview with Hollywood Rebound, Larena discussed a spirituality rooted in connection, describing an understanding of existence that links oneself, other people, and the natural world. The title offers a progression from the debut — I Am Your God questions established authority; Non-Duality considers connection after inherited boundaries have been reconsidered.

"Set Me on Fire," released May 1, 2026, provides the most recent entry point. In their Setlist Kitchen interview, the sisters discussed the song through the image of a phoenix rising from the ashes — resilience, renewal, and the possibility of beginning again. Across the catalog, fire recurs as a symbol whose meaning shifts with context: desire, danger, destruction, or rebirth.

Visual Storytelling and SXSW

Visual work is another part of MOTHERMARY's artistic identity. The sisters direct their own videos, creating a visual language that mirrors the music: religious dreams, obsession, marriage, suffering, and the surreal. The SXSW 2023 Music Videos Program included "Coming For You Remix," described by the festival as a surreal narrative involving two nuns. The visual work is not separate from the music — it is the music given physical form.

Chicago's Empty Bottle hosts the published November 5 date. Two nights later, Market Hotel brings the lineup to Brooklyn, where the event listing identifies Desire as the headliner and includes Johnny Jewel and MOTHERMARY. The Brooklyn stop also connects with the project's beginnings — MOTHERMARY took shape in New York, where Elyse began the music that would become the sisters' shared work.

Rotterdam's November 21 announcement presents the lineup under the Italians Do It Better Records banner, describing an evening built around dream pop, cinematic synthesizers, and electronic atmosphere.

The December appearances connect Močvara in Zagreb and Zappa Baza in Belgrade across consecutive nights. Promoter Hangtime explicitly includes MOTHERMARY in both announcements, with Johnny Jewel also part of the lineup.

Why Fans of Electronic Pop Should Arrive Early

A shared bill offers a direct opportunity for discovery. Within that setting, the sisters bring their own perspective — a project that explores how expectations shape identity and how artistic expression can help reconsider them. For someone arriving primarily to see Desire or Johnny Jewel, MOTHERMARY offer a reason to make the whole evening part of the experience.

What to Listen to Before Seeing MOTHERMARY

A useful introduction begins with I Am Your God, continues through Non-Duality, and ends with "Set Me on Fire." Together, those releases cover a debut album, a later EP, and a recent single. For a shorter introduction, PaperMedia recommends "Pray" and "Coming For You" from the debut, "Feel" and "For You" from the later catalog, and "Set Me on Fire" as the 2026 entry point.

Where to See MOTHERMARY in the U.S. and Europe

The verified appearances offer opportunities to encounter MOTHERMARY in Pioneertown, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Brooklyn, Berlin, Rotterdam, Zagreb, and Belgrade.

For Elyse and Larena Winn, the creative journey has involved claiming the right to determine their own sound and meaning. Their work keeps examining how belief and desire shape a life — and how that life can be reimagined. For an audience, the invitation is immediate: enter the room, hear the music, and discover the project for yourself.
